Electricity in Italy

In Italy, the standard voltage is 230 V, and the frequency is 50 Hz. The power plugs and sockets used are of type C, F, and L.

Types of Plugs

  • Type C: This plug has two round pins and is the most commonly used in Italy. It’s often called the “Europlug” and works in most European countries.
  • Type F: This is also known as the “Schuko” plug and has two round pins with two earth clips on the side. It’s also widely used in Europe.
  • Type L: This is a unique plug used only in Italy. It has three round pins arranged in a row, and it’s used for high-powered appliances.

Voltage and Frequency

The voltage in Italy is 230 V, and the frequency is 50 Hz. Most modern devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and cameras, can handle voltages between 100-240 V, which means they can be used in Italy with just an adapter. However, older devices or those that only accept a specific voltage may require a voltage converter.

Is a Voltage Converter Needed?

If your device is not dual voltage (i.e., it only works with 110-120 V), you will need a voltage converter to use it in Italy. Make sure to check your device's specifications before traveling to avoid damaging it with the wrong voltage.

Power Adapters

If your plug type is different from the ones used in Italy, you will need a power plug adapter. It’s advisable to bring an adapter from home or purchase one upon arrival in Rome.
